Description:

A fast and sleek lens profile, EDGE gives a rimless and unencumbered view of the digital world. Integrated modular frame with sculpted metal hinges create the optimal ergonomics for long sessions in front of the screen. i-FI lens coatings: i-Fi lens coatings filter and protect. Our proprietary nano-filters help capture all of the good light coming from the computer screen while diffusing the bad reflective light and glare. The outer coating provides a protective layer that shields the lens from scratching, abrasion, and oxidation damage. fRACTYL lens geometry: Computer generated fRACTYL lens geometry mimics nature through advanced science and engineering. Aiding the natural focusing power of the cornea, our lens geometry eases eyestrain caused by near distance computer viewing. fRACTYL lens geometry uses independently curved front and back surfaces to provide unparalleled distortion-free optics. Fused with Gunnar frames, the tightly arced lenses form a personal ocular microclimate that prevents dry eyes. iONik lens tints: iONik lens tints take harsh artificial light and precisely tune it to match the anatomy of the eye. Our custom organic dye compounds condition and shift transmitted light into the preferred color spectrum, increasing visual contrast, detail and resolution. Edges of screen pixilated images read more easily and interfering blue light is reduced -- ultimately your eyes are less fatigued. diAMIX lens material: No existing lens material had all the properties we needed. So we gave our lab techs the task of developing the lightest, most optically pure lens material possible. Beating out polycarbonate on the toughness scale and rivaling the undisputed optics of ground glass, diAMIX is the next generation of lens materials for those that demand the highest optical qualities.

3Flashy Packing...Cheap Glasses - BewareFeb 18, 2010
Before I say anything else, I typically sit in front of a computer the better part of the week. While I don't wear glasses, I thought that taking a proactive step to help my eyes would be worth this investment. I will start by saying - don't be fooled by this item. Read other recommendations - save money - you can find cheaper solutions than this - probably with similar quality.

First - I opened the box (very nice packaging) and pulled the glasses out. They were extremely dirty. I don't want to say it was fingerprints - but the glasses were extremely smudged. After reading some other reviews - this appears to be normal. At this point, I'm concerned, fancy box and dirty glasses - this does not equal quality.

Second - after my 5-10 minute effort to wipe every bit of junk from these (not being dramatic, took a while to get them perfect), I tried them out. The glasses were a poor fit to my head - which was the first indication these were going to have to be returned - but I pushed on - still trying to muster excitement for these glasses. Immediately I noticed glare on the glasses. To be clear, no glasses - no glare (or interference in my field of view) --- wearing the Gunnar Edge - glare in both lenses. Ironically, it isn't from the LCD in front of me, it is picking up glare from an LCD nearly 12 ft away. This is okay, I was intending to use them at this location anyway. I put the newly cleaned glasses back in the box and get them ready to go to work tomorrow.

So, I pull these new glasses out first thing in the morning. Show my new glasses to a co-worker who is impressed with how they look. I put them on, and within 10 minutes, I'm already halfway to a major headache. The pressure being caused by the very cheap (I only get this pain when I'm wearing cheap frames) arms on the frames. Behind my ears they are causing such pressure that I can't wear them even for 15 minutes.

With my short experience (I write this after less than half a day of attempting to wear these) - I would say they are cheap, cheap, cheap. I wear high end glasses - and I have for about the last 15 years. In fact, I have over 10 pairs of Oakley's - from the original Eye Jacket to E and T wire frames, several others I forget the names to - and multiple pairs of Juliets. I wear Oakley's and swear by them because they are high end - and they don't cause me any discomfort when wearing. Not to mention, in the rare occasions I've had an issue - I send my several hundred dollar pair of glasses back to Oakley pay them a minor fee, and they come back virutally brand new.

That being said, I would say that the region behind my ears are sensitive. But I would also say, quality frames do not cause me any discomfort.

Beyond the frames, I would say that wearing them also took away from my viewing experience. I'm looking at two professional grade HP 24" workstation class LCD monitors. The magnification caused an odd issue on the split between the monitors. The montiors are slighly angled where they meet, I did not like the disruption. Adding an amber haze (tint) to the viewing experience was not pleasurable either. The connection points of the frame to the lenses are also in the field of view and add another disruption. I could say this, I could get a special pair of lenses for one of my Juliets, and those frames which are heavier would be 10 times better than these.

You never know until you try - and my experience may not be reflective of yours. Compared to an Oakley Frame - these are junk (sorry - but it is true). The lenses probably did their intended task - but I would rather wear a pair of shooting glasses at my desk (probably wouldn't be well received) - than wear these. In the end, I would rather pay two to three times this amount for quality eyewear - in place of the "one size fits all solution."

Seems to be a mixed bag of opinions - I've put mine in the middle. Hopefully if you do get a pair of these, they will be kinder to you than me.

5comfort for your eyesDec 07, 2009
I recently had a lasik eye surgery, and my eyes are more sensitive to lights and get dry a lot faster for the first few months. This glasses was a savior. I'm a software engineer, and I work in front of my computer for at least 8-10 hours per day. This glasses helps me look at my computer screen longer without any irritation. It is amazing the difference in how my eyes feel after a couple days wearing these glasses.

At first, I thought it might feel awkward and uncomfortable to look through this yellow tinted glasses, but from the moment I wear this glasses, it is not awkward at all. It fact I find it eases the strain on my eyes.

The frames are light and it fits my head perfectly, I have no complains regarding the shape and frame of this glasses. The price is a tad expensive, however, for what it does for my eyes, I would invest in this glasses.

5Perform at digital peak levelJun 12, 2009
Gunnar Optiks Catalyst Edge Digital Performance Eyewear help me perform at peak level when I'm in the digital world. They provide enhanced pixel definition while I'm looking at important spreadsheets and data on my computer display. Whether I'm engaging in secure e-communication on the 'net, mining important data sources, or just unwinding in a chat room, the "microclimate" provided by the wrapped lenses keeps my eyes ready to work at hyper-efficient levels most people never get to experience. I've also found that the aggressive appearance of Gunnar Optiks subtly intimidates my competitors. (I think that's the "Digital Edge" they're referring to in the name.)

Secondly, and just as important, when I'm wearing my Catalyst Edge eyewear, it's a signal to my coworkers that I do not wish to be disturbed by needless socializing or "snail" activities outside the digital realm. When I take them off, they know I'm ready to gear down and communicate on the (yawn) human-to-human level. Beware, though: that intimidation effect is pretty strong. YMMV, but my coworkers often seem hesitant to socialize with me even AFTER I take them off. LOL!

It's common knowlege that in the next ten years, virtually all human activity will migrate to the 'net. Unfortunately, our weak human eyes have not yet evolved to cope with the massive amounts of data we now have available. Until some kind of direct brain connection can be made (and it will be soon, I hope) I would highly recommend the Catalyst Edge Performance Eyewear to give yourself an advantage over your competitors.

4Premium Glasses for a Premium PriceFeb 26, 2009
I've never worn glasses before but do believe I'm getting to that point. As my screens and their related resolutions have gotten larger (and my font sizes smaller) eye strain is definitely something that is impacting me more now than it did just a few years ago.

So after receiving a pair of these high-end reading glasses I figured I'd give them a shot. I was skeptical and didn't expect much of an improvement. But to my surprise they really did alleviate some of the eye strain I feel at the end of a long work day.

Overall these are durable lenses packaged immaculately, following Apple's lead with an impressive introductory unboxing experience. They are light weight and comfortable and feel like a premium product.

These are NOT for creative professionals, however. First, their amber tint changes the color temperature of your display, so folks looking for accurate color in Photoshop will need to take them off to make those adjustments. Second, because these glasses have some slight magnification there is some distortion (a slight curve) which might be a problem for graphic artists.

Still for those of us coding or having to read large quantities of text on screen these do make an improvement. Although I think for many a trip to the eye doctor for an examination and prescription glasses might be a better investment.

4Great for gaming and reading text. Comfort for your eyes, but not so much on the head. Feb 26, 2009
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1C2SB31LMPOF3 Okay... diAMIX, fRACTYLlens geometry, i-FIlens coatings, iONIK lens... umm WHAT?! Basically, does it work? Well, in short... yes. But is it revolutionary? No (but it sounds and looks kind of cool).

First of all, sadly, I spend too much of my life on the computer or some other form of digital screen, so I was really curious to try this out. I keep my monitor brightness as low as possible without colors ending up too dark, but the white is still bright and can be harsh on my eyes.

Having these glasses on definitely help in that regard. I never realized how bright it still was until I put these on and then removed them to see the difference. There is a yellow tint, but you're not just looking through a yellow glass. You can still see the colors and you'll soon forget there's even a tint after awhile, especially on darker backgrounds.

I wear contact lenses and having that slight extra magnication on these glasses definitely help ease reading. The text is definitely easier to read, not only because of the slight magnification, but it separates the harsh background with the tint. Before getting used to it, a lot of people will feel as if the text is somewhat popping out at you.

The magnification also helps without having to squint at small text, so that alone will of course help ease your eyes. I know most people are not a fan of the extra magnification, but I'm glad they added it. It also create an illusion as if I got a bigger computer screen or when I'm using my portable video player.

This may be going too far, but I think it's great not just for electronic screens, but for reading regular books. (I never realized how bright white pages can be too). They probably don't recommend this, but I also went driving while wearing this during the day time and night time. On a dark cloudy day, the yellow tint made things slightly brighter, so it actually helped me see better.

My biggest complaint would be the comfort of the earpiece. Although it helps long hours for the eyes, there's a trade off on the comfort of wearing this after awhile; it's a bit tight for me and it feels like it's putting more pressure than it should on my head (my head size is pretty average). I know I would be able to play rough sports with this without ever falling off. However, I don't think it has to be that secure/tight, since I'm just going to be sitting in front of a computer. The material used doesn't help much either. It could be much softer and the quality actually feels kind of cheaper. I wish they would have used a much lighter or thinner earpiece.

The black plastic nose-piece that connects to the glasses can also feel like it gets in the way if you become conscious about it. I don't know why they couldn't use a clear type than black; I feel they put cosmetics priority for some issues than comfort/use.

Despite that problem, and some people may not even feel the same about the earpiece, I still feel this helps my eyes stare at the screen for longer hours than usual.

Pros
- Feels like it creates more depth to what you're looking at, separating from background. (reducing the harsh brightness, giving it more contrast)
- Really great for gaming (easier to see enemies separating from backgrounds with the addition of slight magnification)
- Helps eyestrain.
- Recommended if you do a lot of text reading on the computer

Cons:
- The earpiece could be more comfortable. (feels too tight on the head)
- The black plastic nose-piece can get annoying (if you become really conscious about it)
- Not really recommended for graphic designers (obviously if color accuracy is crucial because of the slight yellow tint).
- Expensive (but most eyeglaseses are)
